Michelle asked:

I’m 19 years old….

I’ve scheduled several interviews over the next few days. I have never been employed before.

I have scheduled an interview for a Waffle House, the Gazebo which is a coffee shop, and a day care.

Since it will be my first experience being interviewed for employment, what are some good tips for this? Are there things I need to do? I’m extremely nervous and feel like I’m going into it blindly.

I do have some volunteer work in day care and I’m a mother of two children that I take care of all by myself. So, I consider myself somewhat qualified for the day care position but as for the others, I think I need to make sure the interviewer knows what skills and qualities I have that might help me in the waitress positions I am applying for.

Aside from this, I do have trouble keeping a conversation going with people. I am always the listener, not the talker. This concerns me. I am afraid I will not be outgoing enough for my interviewer or that I will not make a lasting impression.

Does anyone have any advice or tips for me?

Here’s a few tips to share.

    Pre-interview Preparation
Prior to the interview, spend time to research more about the place of employment. For instance, search online and read about the company. Getting background information will make you present yourself as a serious and committed employee and also help you to converse better during the interview. Take time to consider your personal STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES and how that may enhance or hinder you should you clinch the job. You may be asked these questions during the interview.

    Appearance / Presentation
First impression counts, so its is important to dress and present yourself appropriately depending on the place of employment. You may want to take note of the dress code before turning up for your interview.

    Body language
Not all of us can be sociable upon demand. Let your body language do the talking instead. If the interviewer shares information about the company or the job with you, always show your interest. For example, establish eye contact at all times. Lean forward when listening. Smile and nod appropriately. Whenever you can, try and ask questions to clarify what was said. Or use phrases like “I understand what you mean…” “I certainly agree” to show that you are follow the conversation. You may also show interest in the interviewer by asking questions like “How long have you been working here?”. Trust me, the interviewer will be flattered that you ask personal questions about him / her.

Just relax, and pay attention. Job searching isn’t as easy as people say it is. When you are 19 years old, and job searching, you have to take whatever comes to you. Most employers don’t care who they interview and hire. You may be the perfect person for them, and they take a single look at you. It took 2 years for someone to hire me. Supermarkets and restaurants have been known to be the worst places, and I believe it from past experience.

Give it a try, and go in for the interviews. Make sure you thank the managers for their time.
