I’m graduating this april from a specialist in finance and eco major program from U of T. I didn’t really do much in terms of working during my university life. I know so many people with so much more experience than I do. I’ve been looking for a job for quite a while now without any luck. I’m extremely scared that I won’t be able to find a job after graduation. I’ve been to school career sessions, networking things, and everything but nothing’s worked!!! I’ve also worked on my resume many times but there are just way too many candidates that are better than I am out there!

How long does it usually take for a new grad to get a decent job? I don’t have the best grades, my gpa is only a 3.01 out of 4. Is this bad? What can I do? I really want a job in the finance field but everything is so competitive in Toronto.

It’s true that employers would prefer people with lots of past working experiences, other than just a good academic transcript.
But, recommendations are a in-trend to get work. If you have friend or relatives who can help you in recommending a job, go to them and ask for assistance.
Normally, a fresh grad would take more than 3 months to get that job…it depends on each person. Job-hunting requires a lot of luck. So, try all options — recommendations from friends/relatives, go to employment agency, even pray if you must.
Get a job first…before moving on to bigger things. Maybe you can get a job in a small company first to gain some experience before trying out at international corporations.
I graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting 1 1/2 months ago and can’t find a job either. I have a lower gpa than yours, no experience, no network and etc. I suggest that you keep looking and don’t give up. Other suggestions as last resort.
1) McDonald’s, you’ll make manager in a few years. The pay is o.k ($10.50/hr where I live). This way you can still put your degree to work.
2) Join the army, with a bachelor’s degree in anything you start out as an E-4 corporal/specialist $1,700 a month. Instead of an E-1 which is less than $1,000 a month.
3) Find another career or job that’s not finance related. Times has changed, everybody now-a-days have a degree. Only back in the 1960’s did a bachelor’s degree guarantee a managerial career.
